Boat 1a

In the town of Rangeley located in Maine - in the upper left corner near Canada - there is quite often a lingering fog that nestles into the town.  This photograph was taken about 10:00 A.M. as the fog receded away from the lake and the mid-morning sun illuminated the changing trees in a beacon of brightness.  Taken on 9-25-2008 at 10:12:58 with a Nikon D300 with the 18-200mm VR lens at 200 ISO @ 1/640 s at f/5. Epson R1800 print using 200 year+ archival dyes

2

Moon Rise

Having lived in Calvert County since 1969, I have seen some very large changes.  And during this time I was fortunate enough to have a photography business and was able to capture pieces and parts before they disappeared forever - much like this house on the Bowen farm that is now the site of Plum Point Elementary and Middle School.   Taken in 1975 with a Nikon F1 with the 50mm standard lens at 100 ISO @ 1/125 s at f/8.

3

Field In Summer

Barns in Calvert County were used to hang tobacco to cure - but as the years went by fewer and fewer farmers would grow tobacco.  The fields have become covered with Queen  Anne’s Lace and the barns would be covered in vines. Taken on 6-24-2003 at 11:23:48 AM with a Panasonic Lumix DMC-LC5 focal length 8.19mm at 100 ISO @ 1/750 s at f/8.

4

Old Farm

Back off Sixes Road south of Prince Frederick, in the early 1970’s farm homesteads like this one could be seen.  Most toady are gone. This photograph was taken with a Nikon F1 with the 50mm  lens at 100 ISO @ 1/200 s at f/2.8.

Maine Mountains

While waiting the cover of night to begin the fireworks display from the town of Rangeley in Maine, we traveled to Height of Land - an overlook that provided great vistas over the valleys surrounding Rangeley lakes - and there as the setting sun disappeared behind the mountains, we were treated to nature’s glowing display of her own “fireworks”. Taken on 7-3-2007 at 6:51:04 PM with a Nikon D80 with the 18-200mm VR lens at 800 ISO @ 1/60 s at f/7.1.Epson R1800 print using 200 year+ archival dyes

6

Cundy’s Harbor

During my Fall trip in 2008 I stopped for a few days at my sister’s home in Cundy’s Harbor and for three days it rained.  While out for a walk in the rain I saw this blue boat and thought how it looked like a French painting. Taken on 9-27-2008 at 4:47:14 PM with a Nikon D300 with the 18-200mm VR lens at 200 ISO @ 1/125 s at f/5.6.

9

Tree in Rock

This example of Digital Art Etching is a process that certain types of photographs stand out.  It used to be a very difficult process in film - three separate negatives - but using the computer it is converted quickly.  This photograph of a small tree growing out of a rock in Cow Pond in Maine turned out excellently as an etching.  Taken on 9-25-2008 at 1:09:28 with a Nikon D90 with the 18-200mm VR lens at 3200 ISO @ 1/1000 s at f/8.

13

Mist Moose

This Fall I traveled to Rangeley Maine to capture the incredible Fall foliage and also try and get a few photographs of moose - I had been able to find female cow moose but the bull moose was harder to find.  At pre-dawn in heavy morning mist. This large bull moose stepped out and said - here - take it.  Taken on 9-25-2008 at 6:13:42 AM with a Nikon D300 with the 18-200mm VR lens at 3200 ISO @ 1/100 s at f/6.3. Epson R1800 print using 200 year+ archival dyes

Small Falls1

Between the town of Rangeley and Farmington in Maine, there is this very beautiful waterfall - this photograph is only of the lower part. You can hike up the side and see the other sections - in all there are four different parts.Taken on 7-2-2007 at 1:02:38 PM with a Nikon D80 with the 18-200mm VR lens at 800 ISO @ 1/400 s at f/5.

Church Storm

In February of 2007 I was traveling with my oldest son to Savannah, Georgia, to visit the college he would end up attending.  As we took the shortcut through Southern Charles County a storm was behind us and as we passed this church the sun came out and illuminated it like a spotlight - so I had to stop and photograph this “Magic Light”.  Taken on 2-22-2007 at 1:18:53 PM with a Nikon D80 with the 18-200mm VR lens at 100 ISO @ 1/160 s at f/6.3. Epson R1800 print using 200 year+ archival dyes

17

Middleham

Throughout Southern Maryland some of the most beautiful architectural wonders are the remaining churches  from the earliest periods - and there are many.  This is Middleham Chapel with the rebuilding date of 1748 laid out in the front in bricks.  It is equally charming inside as well.  Taken on 7-27-2007 at 12:16:29 PM with a Nikon D80 with the 18-200mm VR lens at 800 ISO @ 1/250 s at f/8.

19

Brown Sun

On an early February morning, the Winter fog was hanging low and thick.  My wife had called me at home - we live across from the school where she teaches - she noticed this and said I should get my camera out and take photographs.  Taken on 2-27-2007 at 7:20:53 AM with a Nikon D80 with the 18-200mm VR lens at 100 ISO @ 1/5000 s at f/5.7.  Epson R1800 print using 200 year+ archival dyes

20

Crumbling Cliffs

Hiking to the Bay through Calvert Cliffs State Park, the end is at the beach and among the really incredible sights are the long line of cliffs that rise 50 and more feet.  Because of the continual action of the tides against these cliffs, there is a constant crumbling of the clay onto the beach. Taken on 10-23-2006 at 12:40:09 PM with a Kodak P880 at 50 ISO @ 1/809 s at f/3.2.

21

Lobster Shack

At low tide on Bailey Island in Casco Bay in Maine, this lobster shack stood atop the rocks covered in seaweed. The myriad of colors of all the surrounding effects unique to this coastal image has made this one of my favorite photographs.  Taken on 10-04-2006 PM at 12:43:50 with a Kodak P880 at 50 ISO @ 1/400 s at f/4.1.Epson R1800 print using 200 year+ archival dye

23

Lichens

While this late Winter- early Spring photo may not seem important, I was struck by the brilliant hues of these lichens that I found on one log while hiking to Parkers Creek.  Two days later I again went on this same hike and the gold colors were totally gone and the light blues were faded.  Taken on 3-16-2009 at 9:02:25 AM with a Nikon D90 with the 80-400mm VR lens at 2000 ISO @ 1/1600 s at f/5.6.

25

Parker’s Creek – Water

In the Fall of 2006 after being disappointed by a trip to New England I portaged my kayak down to Parkers Creek and found some of the most beautiful Fall vistas right here in Calvert County. Taken on 11-01-2006 at 11:10:03 AM with a KODAK P880  focal length 5mm at 200 ISO @ 1/1000 s at f/2.8.  Epson R1800 print using 200 year+ archival dyes

27

Calvert Cliffs State Park

In the hike down to the Bay at Calvert Cliffs State Park, this is a walkway out to an observation platform in the marsh where you can see the beaver dam.  The warped walkway from Winter freezes was interesting.  Taken on 4-7-2007 at 3:20:44 PM with a Lumix DMC-LC5 at 100 ISO @ 1/1000 s at f/8. Epson R1800 print using 200 year+ archival dyes

28

British ColumbiaLight

We took a trip to British Columbia in 2006 and while the mountains were spectacular, it was looking out from the balcony of our condo that the clouds parted during a storm and the sunlight followed the rain down to the valley below.  Taken on 6-18-2006 at 7:12:58 PM with a Panasonic Lumix DMC-LC5 focal length 20.74mm at 100 ISO @ 1/1000 s at f/8. Epson R1800 print using 200 year+ archival dyes

31

Winter Fog

One of the wonderful things about fog is how it makes us sense a closeness of the world we see, and that which is beyond our sight just disappears in the grayness. Taken on 2-1-2008 at 11:38:21 AM with a Nikon D80 with the 17-55mm VR lens at 800 ISO @ 1/160 s at f/6.3.

Morning Sun

On an early February morning, the Winter fog was hanging low and thick.  My wife had called me at home - we live across from the school where she teaches - she noticed this and said I should get my camera out and take photographs.  Taken on 2-27-2007 at 7:20:35 with a Nikon D80 with the 18-200mm VR lens at 100 ISO @ 1/400 s at f/10.

Drum Point 1

Drum Point Lighthouse now sits fully restored at the Calvert Marine Museum in Solomon's Island, Maryland.  It is a screwpile, cottage-type light and is one of only three remaining out of the forty-five that served the Chesapeake Bay region. It was moved to its current location in 1975, having been decommissioned in 1962.  Tour guides are available.  Epson R1800 print using 200 year+ archival dyes

Old Barn 2

This example of Digital Art Etching is a process that certain types of photographs stand out.  is converted quickly.  This photograph of a barn and house was near Safeway in downtown Prince Frederick. Taken on 3-14-2007 at 10:58:32 AM with a Nikon D80 with the 18-55mm VR lens at 100 ISO @ 1/200 s at f/7.1.

36

Denton ’s Oyster House

Having lived in Calvert County since 1969, I have seen some very large changes.  And during this time I was fortunate enough to have a photography business and was able to capture pieces and parts before they disappeared forever - this view of Denton’s Oyster House taken in 1971 shows the business when it was thriving - it is no longer there.  This photograph was taken with a Nikon F1 with the 50mm  lens at 100 ISO @ 1/250 s at f/4.5.

37

Reeds

This example of Digital Art Etching is a process that certain types of photographs stand out.  It used to be a very difficult process in film - three separate negatives - but using the computer it is converted quickly.  This photograph of thistles growing at the edge of Parkers Creek made an excellent example.  Taken on 9-25-2008 at 10:12:58 with a Nikon D300 with the 18-200mm VR lens at 200 ISO @ 1/640 s at f/5.

38

Island

In the Fall of 2008 I ventured up to Maine for a second attempt to find the brilliance of Fall in Maine.  Instead I found a lot of fog and gray, and as in this tiny island that stood alone in the disappearing horizon, I found a different kind of beauty. Taken on 9-27-2008 at 11:59:57 AM with a Nikon D300 with the 18-200mm VR lens at 200 ISO @ 1/400 s at f/8.
